7 Things You Can Do to Prepare for an Immigration Emergency 1) Make copies of all of your immigration-related documents, cards, and/or scan themand email them to yourself and/or another trusted person. Memorize your A-Number and the phone numbers of emergency contacts & an attorney.
4) Work on a Family Emergency Plan--including checking and updating emergency contacts and who is allowed to pick up your child at school, and consider a POA (Power of Attorney) for minor children and finances. Sign up for a U.S. Passport for citizen children and family members (requires both parents to go in person). Register with the Consulate of your Country of Origin (i.e. Mexican Consulate, etc.) You may want to have a signed G-28 in safe place that is needed to allow your (new or existing) immigration attorney to connect with you if you are detained.
5) Start saving money toward an emergency fund for an immigration attorney. Let your family know of your preference/memorize phone number in the case of detention. See list of Iowa immigration attorneys on the Online Resources page or a paper copy on the Welcome Center wall at the Marshalltown Public LIbrary. Please note: typically, free legal services are extremely limited for someone in detention or removal proceedings.
6) Commit to NOT sharing rumor or misinformation. Be the person in your family & friends circle who knows who to contact (trusted Coalition organizations) to verify information, policy changes, or incidents.
7) Stay connected to your community. You are not alone. There are many organizations and individuals who are committed to working together for a safe and welcoming community.
